About this tool

LinkedIn posts are plain text: there is no bold or italic button in the post box. This LinkedIn text formatter works around that by swapping each letter and digit for a look-alike character from the Unicode “mathematical alphanumeric” set, which LinkedIn displays like any other character. Underline and strikethrough add a combining line after each character. Accents, emoji and punctuation are left as they are.

Because these are different characters, not real formatting, use them for a few words, not a whole post. Screen readers may read styled letters one by one or by their symbol names, and search may not match a styled word with the plain one, so keep names, keywords and anything people might search for in plain text.

Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and the Clear button turns styled text, including text styled by other tools, back into ordinary letters.

Questions about the LinkedIn text formatter

Does LinkedIn have a bold text option?

Not in a regular post or comment. LinkedIn articles and newsletters have a text editor with bold and italic, but the post box is plain text. Bold text in posts is made with Unicode characters, which is what this formatter does.

Is Unicode bold text bad for accessibility?

It can be. Screen readers may skip the styled letters or read them out as separate symbols, which makes a sentence hard to follow. Keep it to a word or a short phrase, and never style a whole post, a name or a link.

Will styled words show up in LinkedIn search?

Do not count on it. A styled word is made of different characters from the plain word, so search and hashtags may not treat them as the same. Keep keywords and hashtags in plain text.

How many characters can a LinkedIn post have?

Up to 3,000 characters, according to LinkedIn Help. The counter here counts every character, including spaces, line breaks and the invisible marks that make underline and strikethrough.

Why do some styled letters look different on some phones?

Each device draws these characters with its own fonts. Most current phones and computers show them well, but an older device may show a slightly different shape, or an empty box for a character it has no font for.

Can I use the formatted text in my LinkedIn headline or comments?

Yes. The copied text is ordinary Unicode, so it pastes into comments, your headline or your About section as well. The same advice applies: a few styled words, not whole sentences.
