Instagram caption character limit (and every other Instagram limit)

Updated · By the Postora team

The Instagram caption character limit is 2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and hashtags. In the feed, only about the first 125 characters show before the caption is cut off with “more”. Since December 2025 Instagram also limits posts and Reels to 5 hashtags.

How long can an Instagram caption be?

Up to 2,200 characters. Everything counts: letters, spaces, line breaks, punctuation, emoji, @mentions and hashtags. If you go over, Instagram will not let you share until you trim it; it does not cut the text for you.

For scale, 2,200 characters is roughly 300 to 400 words, about the length of a short blog post. The same limit applies to single-photo posts, carousels and Reels. A carousel gets one caption for all of its slides, not one per slide.

Some emoji and special symbols can count as more than one character, so a caption full of emoji reaches the limit sooner than its visible length suggests.

Where Instagram cuts off your caption

In the feed, Instagram shows the first line or two of the caption and hides the rest behind “… more”. Most guides put the cut at about 125 characters. Instagram does not publish an exact number, and the real cut-off depends on the screen, the length of your username, and line breaks: an early line break can end the preview after just a few words.

That means the first 125 characters do most of the work. Use them well:

  • Lead with the point. “The 3 settings that fixed my blurry night photos” beats “So last weekend I went out…”.
  • Back up the cover, don’t repeat it. For a carousel, add a reason to swipe the slides already hint at.
  • Keep hashtags and links out of the opening. They waste the visible part.
  • Front-load keywords. Instagram search reads captions, so the words people search for belong early.

Reels show even less of the caption over the video, so for Reels the first few words matter most.

Instagram hashtag limit: 5 per post

For years the hashtag limit was 30 per post. In December 2025 Instagram announced it would cap captions on posts and Reels at five hashtags, rolling the change out gradually (Social Media Today). Instagram had tested lower limits, including three, for about a year before that.

What this means in practice:

  • Pick five at most. If you try to add more, Instagram may not let the post go up.
  • Go specific. #sourdoughbaking tells Instagram more than #food. Instagram’s own advice has been to use fewer, more targeted tags.
  • Do not hide extra tags in the first comment to get around the cap; reports suggest the limit applies there as well, and it adds clutter.
  • Hashtags still count toward the 2,200 characters.

Hashtags are now a small part of how posts get found. Clear words in the caption, on-slide text and alt text do more of that work.

Username and name limits

Both your username (the @handle) and your name (the bold display name on your profile) can be up to 30 characters. Usernames can use letters, numbers, periods and underscores, but no spaces.

The name field matters more than people think: Instagram search looks at it. “Maya Chen | Home Baking” can be found by someone searching “home baking”; “Maya ✨” cannot. Keep it readable, though. Changing your name too often can be limited, so settle on one you like.

Comment, alt text and other limits

Comments

Instagram does not publish a comment length, but third-party guides report the same 2,200 characters as captions. In practice, long comments are rare and hard to read; a few lines is plenty.

Alt text

Alt text describes an image for people using screen readers, and it also gives Instagram more context. Add it per slide under Advanced settings → Accessibility → Write alt text before sharing, or later with Edit → Edit alt text. Instagram fills in automatic alt text if you leave it empty, but your own is usually better. One clear sentence per image is the right length.

Stories and DMs

Instagram does not publish a character limit for text on Stories; the practical limit is what fits on screen and can be read in a few seconds. Direct messages are commonly reported at about 1,000 characters per message.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

2,200 characters per caption, including spaces, emoji, mentions and hashtags. The same limit applies to photo posts, carousels and Reels.

How many characters show before “more” on Instagram?

About 125 characters in the feed, though Instagram does not publish an exact figure. Line breaks and screen size can make the cut come sooner.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?

Five per post or Reel. Instagram announced the cap in December 2025 and rolled it out gradually, replacing the old limit of 30.

What is the Instagram bio character limit?

150 characters. Links go in a separate field that holds up to five links.

Does each carousel slide get its own caption?

No. A carousel has one caption for the whole post. You can add separate alt text to each slide, though.

How long can an Instagram username be?

30 characters, using letters, numbers, periods and underscores. The display name can also be up to 30 characters.
